April 22, 2010 (Sampurn Wire): Cameron Douglas, son of Hollywood star Michael Douglas, was sent to prison for five years on drug charges. He was arrested in August last year in a New York hotel with large quantities of methamphetamine.

The prosecution presented evidence that Cameron Douglas was selling large quantities of methamphetamine in addition to using the drugs himself.

Cameron was previously jailed in 1999 and 2007 on drug charges. He faces five years of supervision after his release.

Michael Douglas and ex wife Diandra attended the sentencing hearing in the New York court. Douglas had earlier written to judge Berman saying that Cameron was more in need of detoxification treatment than prison.

Judge Richard Berman, who has been receiving a number of letters from supporters of Cameron’s, including those of Hollywood legend and grandfather of Cameron’s, Kirk Douglas, and his step mom Catherine Zeta Jones, said that he considered these letters while giving the verdict.

Apparently "Spartacus" star Kirk Douglas, 93, wrote in his letter, which was made public during the hearing procedure, that his greatest dream was to see his grandson succeed as an actor before he died.
