LOS ANGELES (GaeaTimes.com) A new series on HBO “ Boardwalk Empire” premiered on Sunday night. Directed by Martin Scorsese whose fingerprint can be seen throughout and be it the planks in boardwalk or the interior of Babette’s Supper club you can see his style everywhere. It is quite evident that producer writer Terence winter has done a good job. The series is based on a novel by the same name, “Boardwalk Empire” by Nelson Johnson and it centers on the Atlantic city in the 1920’s where Nucky Thompson - an Atlantic city treasurer presides over his kingdom of babes, booze, graft and gambling.
The character of Nucky Thompson is based on a real life person whose name happens to be Nucky Johnson. The character is played by Steve Buscemi whose role in this series happens to be the exact opposite of Tony Soprano played by James Gandolfini in “The Sopranos”. The character of Tony Soprano happened to be outwardly aggressive and brutish while being inwardly shy compared to Steve Buscemi’s character of Nucky Thompson in Boardwalk Empire who is friendly in public but is a back alley stabber and very shrewd behind closed doors.
Whether Boardwalk empire is going to be a hit or not in the coming weeks is yet to be seen and depend very much on the role of Steve Buscemi. Though there is no debate over the acting abilities of the actor, what seems to be the test is that people compare and whether this character will create the same impression as James Gandolfini’s character in “The Sopranos” or that of Paul Muni in Scarface.
