LOS ANGELES (GaeaTimes.com) — Intense violence, gore and blood thirsty zombies- these are the ultimate selling points of the Resident Evil movie series. Whether it’s the scorching heat of the Nevada deserts or the bone biting icy Alaska, constant action seems to be the only theme running the Resident Evil franchise. The fourth installment of this series named “Resident Evil Afterlife” also carries the same trademark, which one can expect from other Resident Evil films.

This $100 million movie is one of the most talked about film of this year. But unfortunately, despite of some serious mind dazzling action sequences, the movie is completely soulless to the core.

The movie plot is based around Alice’s (Milla Jovovich) fight against Umbrella Corporation, who are responsible for spreading a virus which turns it’s victims into blood sucking zombies. In this movie, Alice looses all her previous superhuman powers, but still carries on to protect survivors from the grasps of the Umbrella Corp. Her deadly battle with the Umbrella Corporation reaches new heights, but Jovovich gets some unexpected help from an old friend, Ali Larter. A new lead that promises a safe haven takes them to Los Angeles, but when they arrive, the city is overrun by thousands of Undead. Jovovich and her comrades fight their way through it.

The theme is quite simple, but yet, without any goal or focus. Unlike the previous three editions of the Resident Evil franchise (Resident Evil, Resident Evil: Apocalypse and Resident Evil: Extinction), this one falls short on the storyline. Even if you accept the film to be a sci-fi flick, some serious logical inconsistancy stands out during the film.

In terms of actor’s performance, Milla Jovovich is a real treat to watch as Alice. She performs ably in the action sequences and looks quite a fighter. But due to loose script, her performance remains quite limited. The rest of the cast is quite miserable, except for Ali Larter, who complements Milla in a wonderfully choreographed action sequence. Cinematography was excellent while Editing by Niven Howie could have been better.

Releasing the story in 3D was a bad idea. What you don’t have in a story, you can expect to cover it up by 3D. In fact 1hr and 45 mins of constant violence in 3D might give you a latent headache! The special and visual effects are excellent. In fact, one wonders what the film would have been like, had the story been more interesting.

All in all, at the end of the day, Resident Evil Afterlife fails to live up to the franchise brand. What we have got is an emotionless adrinaline pumped ass-kicking girl playing with blood and gore. Although if you are a fan of no-holds-barred action films, this film is sure to make you go crazy.
