LONDON - Hollywood police have arrested a man dressed in a Batman costume after he was spotted ‘begging’ on the streets.

They have also warned others dressed like Hulk, Spiderman and Superman to expect the same kind of treatment if they were caught soliciting money from tourists.

The costumed characters are a long-established feature of Hollywood Boulevard, but there have been many complaints that they have been begging for money.

They are legally allowed to walk down the street and accept tips if offered but are not supposed to ask for them.

Batman, alias Tony Tomey, was singled out and taken away in handcuffs after police monitored a group of six superheroes on June 2.

“There actually was an expectation of money changing hands and illegal activity documented,” the Telegraph quoted a spokesman for the Hollywood Entertainment District as saying.

Batman’s arrest has dismayed his other costumed colleagues.

“I knew this day was going to come, eventually,” Joe McQueen, who dresses as the Hulk, said.

“We live in America, don’t we? This is not America,” he stated.

Hollywood street performers have occasionally clashed with police on the famous boulevard. Elmo, Mr Incredible and Chewbacca have all been arrested for various legal infringements in recent years.

In 2007, a Batman impersonator was charged with disorderly conduct after he demanded to use a portable lavatory belonging to union workers picketing a local business.

Two years later, Spiderman was arrested after he allegedly assaulted a man on the boulevard. (ANI)
