Hollywood cashing on 3d

April 20, 2010 (Sampurn Wire): The gigantic success of James Cameron’s Avatar has made 3d technology a rage in Hollywood. Additional revenue being pulled in by 3D movies at the box office has made up for the money lost from falling sales of DVDs. Even those films that were shot with 2d cameras were quickly reprocessed in 3d and released claiming to be a 3d film.
Disney’s Alice in Wonderland and Warner Brother’s Clash of the Titans opted for 3d release but they are not real 3d in the sense that they were not filmed in 3D like Avatar was.
DreamWorks animation CEO Jeff Katzenberg , one of the major supporters of the 3d commented on this latest fad saying that release of Warner Brother’s Clash of the Titans as a 3d film is the result of quick and cheap post production. It was shot using regular 2D cameras, unlike Avatar which was shot with 3D cameras and had actors don special suits that allowed their movements and expressions to be recreated in 3D using computer software. The 3D experience can be enchanting as long as it is done right rather than a studio hurriedly re-processes to 3D format a film meant to be released in 2D.
DreamWorks is releasing next month’s Shrek Forever After, the final chapter of the successful fantasy franchise, in 3D and is working to convert the first three of the series into the format for a special 3D Blu-ray release. The latest buzz is that Martin Scorsese is doing a movie in 3d. It’s called ‘The Invention of Hugo Cabret’ and is an adaptation of a children’s novel by Brian Selznick.
