TV footage show insurgents with US ammo

KABUL — Television footage shows insurgents handling what appears to be U.S. ammunition in eastern Afghanistan that American forces left last month following a deadly firefight that killed eight troops.

Al-Jazeera broadcast video Tuesday showing insurgents handling weapons — some with U.S. markings on them — and reported that insurgents said they seized the weapons from two U.S. remote outposts in Nuristan province. That’s where the eight troops died in early October in one of the heaviest losses of U.S. life in a single battle since the war began.

NATO spokesman Lt. Col. Todd Vician says the material in the footage “appears to be U.S. equipment,” but that forces that left the outposts said they removed and accounted for all items they had in the area.
