Plans under way for ‘Strictly Ballroom’ on stage
NEW YORK — Plans for a stage musical adaptation of the cult film “Strictly Ballroom” are cha-cha-cha-ing along.
Producers of the project say film director Baz Luhrmann plans to begin workshopping the book and music from his 1992 movie in December in Sydney.
The location of the show’s premiere and other details weren’t announced Thursday.
“Strictly Ballroom” tells the story of two dancing misfits who team up to try to win a ballroom contest. John “Cha Cha” O’Connell choreographed the original film and will return for the stage version.
Luhrmann’s other movies include a version of “Romeo and Juliet” starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes and “Moulin Rouge,” with Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor.
The musical will be produced by Global Creatures and Bazmark, Luhrmann’s production company.
