August 28, 2010 (Sampurn Wire): Lovefilm, the UK based video-on-demand film and TV subscription service provider, has entered in to a major deal with the US’s lion Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer for a multi-year pact to distribute physical rental of a slew of new and old classic titles of MGM’s, through Lovefilm’s site and on VOD.

The deal will come in effect in this coming September, when initially, MGM’s 250 classic titles, including the multi-Oscar winners such as “West Side Story” and “The Apartment” as well as the original 1974 BAFTA-nominated “The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3” will be available to 1.4 million European subscribers of Lovefilm. However, major franchise pictures such as “James Bond” and “The Hobbit” are excluded from the deal.

In addition to the classics, new releases from MGM will also be added to Lovefilm’s extensive, 67000 titles strong library, though, on as-and-when transactional basis.

The pact with MGM is the biggest deal Lovefilm has struck ever since its inception six years ago. With digital revolution underway, this premium content on-demand provider captured the market and ensured huge growth in their clientele and their bottom-line when they sealed a deal with Amazon and took over the online bookstore’s rental service division.

Both, GM and Lovefilm, are very optimistic about the deal and hope to expand the reach of their audiences as the time moves on.

Three Cheers for 1.4 million members of Lovefilm around UK, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Germany!
