Portia de Rossi, an Australian actress and wife of Ellen DeGeneres have applied before the Los Angeles County Superior court to legally change her name to Portia Lee James DeGeneres. She applied for the change of surname two days after the Proposition 8 - law that banned same sex marriage was “unconstitutional”. This action of Portia marks a symbolic victory for the LGBT community for California. She got married to Ellen in August 2008 when licenses to such marriage were granted in California.

Portia de Rossi, was previously known for her roles in the TV shows Ally McBeal and Arrested Development. She and Ellen are considered as an ideal for same sex couples across America.
