June 11, 2010 (Sampurn Wire): Pop singer Ricky Martin will be returning to Broadway in 2012, to play the role of Che in the musical revival of “Evita”, based on the life of the Argentine political leader Eva Peron. Argentine actress, Elena Roger will be playing the title role. The play will be produced by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice and will be directed by Michael Grandage.

Elena Roger previously played this role on 2006 in London’s Adelphi theatres. She received a Olivier Award nomination for the role. And now she will be playing “Evita” again at a Nederlander theatre on 2012. Rob Ashford will be choreographing again for “Evita” after the 2006 version.

“Evita” has been played several times around the world under several productions since it first opened in 1978. It has also been made into a major Hollywood film starring Antonio Banderas and Madonna.

Ricky Martin, 38, made headlines earlier this year confirming that he was gay. He seems all excited to play Che in “Evita”. He said that despite doing several stage concerts he had never lost his love for the theatre. He has previously worked on Broadway in “Les Miserables”.

The revival of “Evita” is expected to begin in the spring of 2012.

Recently Martin has been honored with the AMFAR Award Of Inspiration, for his extensive humanitarian endeavors through his Ricky Martin Foundation, which includes constant working for the health and welfare of children around the world and recent reconstruction efforts in Haiti.

Wow- this is surprising news. I’m interested in seeing how is acting is! We all know he can sing, but if he can act as well, this could be a great role for him!
