June 4, 2010 (Sampurn Wire): After the phenomenal success of James Cameron’s Avatar, 3D seems to have become Hollywood’s latest bandwagon. For Avatar, Cameron had to wait more than ten years before the necessary technology was available to achieve his vision of the film. The film that was conceived in 1994 broke several box office records after releasing in 2009 and became the highest-grosser ever.

Following the success of Avatar, several other films have been released in the 3D format. A film like the Clash of Titans that was not shot in 3D format was also given a 3D release.

Since the beginning of this year many 3D films have come including How to Train Your Dragon, Alice in a Wonderful, Shrek Forever After, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time etc. Prince of Persia: Sands of Time is also important for the fact that it is based on a video game, a particular genre of films which have an abysmal box office record.

This entire year and the next are lined with films release of 3D films, with next big release being Toy Story 3. The popularity of this technology can be guessed by the fact that many film franchise have also decided to make their latest film in 3D.

There have been reports of films like Pirates of Caribbean 4: On the Stranger Tides being made in 3D and also Men in Black 3, which is scheduled to release sometime in 2012.
