May 8, 2010 (Sampurn Wire): In a statement on Friday, Columbia Pictures announced the development of third installment of ‘Men in Black’ set for a 3D release in 2012.
Will Smith will resume his role of alien-hunter Agent J while negotiations are going on with Tommy Lee Jones, who played Agent K in the previous Men in Black offerings. Academy Award nominated star Josh Brolin is also in talks to play the younger version of Jones’s character in the film.
The film will be directed by Barry Sonnenfeld and produced by Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald. Steven Spielberg will resume the job of executive producer of the film. Production of the film aims to start off in fall 2010. It has also been confirmed that David Koepp is the new screenwriter joining Etan Cohan and is currently re-writing a new draft of the script.
Both the previous Men in Black films are based on the comic book series by Lowell Cunningham, originally published by Aircel Comics. The first film was released in 1997 and grossed over $587 million worldwide against a $90 million budget. It is currently the 49th highest grossing film of all time. The second film released in 2002, too was a commercial success but not to the extent of the first.
