NEW YORK - Science fiction epic “Avatar” continues to dominate the US box office, leading ticket sales for the sixth-straight weekend.

James Cameron’s 3D story of blue-skinned aliens earned $36 million on the weekend, and has brought in a total of $552 million in the US alone since opening. The hit has surpassed the Batman film “The Dark Knight” (533 million) for second place on the all-time highest earning movies, but still trails Cameron’s 1997 hit “Titanic” (601 million).

On the weekend, horror flick “Legion” opened at second place with $18.2 million. “The Book of Eli” starring Denzel Washington as a post apocalyptic hero fell to third place with $17 million.

Comedy “Tooth Fairy” with $14.5 million and “The Lovely Bones” with $8.8 million rounded out the top five.
