Seven Latin American films among Golden Globe award finalists

LOS ANGELES - Seven Latin American entries are in the running for the best foreign-language film prize in the 67th edition of the Golden Globe Awards, Variety magazine reported.
The movies - three of them Mexican, two Chilean, one Argentine and one Bolivian - were included on a list of 69 finalists by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which presents the Golden Globes.
That puts them one step away from being named as one of the five nominees for the award, which will be handed out in a ceremony in Los Angeles Jan 17.
The critically acclaimed Chilean film “La nana” (The Maid), which picked up two jury prizes at the most recent Sundance Film Festival, is considered to be the Latin American entry with the best chance to grab a nomination.
Catalina Saavedra has been hailed for her performance in that film as a frustrated and lonely maid who has worked for more than 20 years for an upper-class family.
Other finalists include Mexico’s “Rudo y Cursi”, which marks a reunion for Mexican actors Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna, best known for their performances in the 2001 Mexican drama film “Y Tu Mama Tambien” (And Your Mother Too).
In “Rudo y Cursi”, Bernal and Luna play a pair of brothers and banana plantation workers whose lives change drastically when they are discovered by a soccer talent scout.
Among the Spanish films under consideration in this year’s Golden Globe Awards are Pedro Almodovar’s latest, “Los abrazos rotos” (Broken Embraces), in which the acclaimed director has once again cast Penelope Cruz in the lead role.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association will announce the nominees for the 2010 Golden Globe Awards Dec 15.
