Memorial sculpture honors NIU shooting victims
DEKALB, Ill. — Officials at Northern Illinois University have unveiled a sculpture at the site of a campus shooting that left five students dead in 2008.
The piece by artist Bruce Niemi is called “Remembered” and was unveiled Thursday at the DeKalb campus. The sculpture is in addition to a memorial garden outside the lecture hall where the shootings occurred.
Niemi says one of the main things he hoped to accomplish with his sculpture was “to help out the parents.”
On Feb. 14, 2008, a former student entered a Cole Hall auditorium and fatally shot five students in a geology class before turning the gun on himself.
