Fisher art collection to be housed in San Fran
SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art will house one of the world’s great contemporary art collections after forming a partnership with Gap Inc. founders Don and Doris Fisher to house the couple’s some 1,100 works.
The Fisher collection features some of the 20th century’s most well-known artists, including Richard Diebenkorn, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol and Willem de Kooning.
SFMOMA is planning a major expansion that will triple the museum’s space, providing an opportunity to display the Fishers’ collection.
The Fishers had tried to build a museum of their own in the city’s Presidio, a national park, but withdrew their proposal after fierce local opposition.
