Sharp to boost TV panel output as demand improves
TOKYO — Japanese electronics maker Sharp Corp. said Thursday it will raise production of panels for TVs to meet improving global demand.
Sharp will boost production by about 10 percent to 100,000 from 90,000 after August at one of its plants in Kameyama, which makes so-called “eighth-generation” glass panels, the Osaka-based maker of Aquos TVs said in a release.
The move comes on top of a decision announced in April to bring another LCD plant, in nearby Sakai, into operation in October.
Sharp has been adjusting its operations to produce at its newer plants making bigger panels, while closing some of its older assembly lines that make small- and medium-size displays.
It has also been trying to reshape its business amid the economic downturn to focus on China and other emerging markets with growth potential.
