Tonys retiring special theatrical event category

NEW YORK — The Tony Awards are retiring the special theatrical event category.

The category elimination will take effect beginning with the 2009-10 season. The Tonys announced Thursday that qualifying entries will be placed into best play or best musical categories and that the Tonys can still bestow a “Special Tony Award” if merited.

This year’s winner of the special theatrical event Tony was Liza Minnelli’s “Liza’s at The Palace.”
