Edwin Newman Dies At 91

OXFORD, UNITED KINGDOM (GaeaTimes.com)- Reputed former news anchor and broadcaster of NBC network Edwin Newman passed away in Oxford, England last month after battling with Pneumonia for some time. He passed away at the age of 91 on August 13th. However the news was not made known to the media and public to give his bereaved family members the time for mourning. The broadcaster who became an inseparable part of the network also earned a name for becoming a fierce protector of English language and grammar. In 2007 he shifted base to London to stay close to his daughter. The news was conformed by Rupert Mead - his attorney.
Edwin Newman’s association with NBC dates back to the 1950s. He took retirement in the year 1984. In his tenure he worked as an anchor, correspondent and critic in the network and excelled in each of the roles. His work and talent did not go unnoticed and that explains why he got 7 Emmy awards in his lifetime. He is remembered for covering some of the landmark and most memorable political developments including the murder of John F. Kennedy former US President. The historical Ford-Carter debate as well as Reagan-Mondale debate were also covered by him. He wrote two books on grammar and linguistics named Strictly Speaking and A Civil Tongue.
Edwin Newman introduced a new level of understanding, gravity and wit to news broadcasting and the contemporaries of the anchor admired him for his talent and innovative approach to work. He was expert in covering political news and development and did a nice job.
