LONDON (GaeaTimes.com) — The Mercury prize, which is presented to the best album of the year has been won by the south London band The xx. The prize worthing a whopping 20,000 goes to the album XX.
Reportedly, the band had competed with 11 shortlisted that include Paul Weller and Dizzee Rasca too. But at the last, they succeeded in achieving the grand prize for the urban soundscape in their debut album XX.
While collecting the award from Jools Holland, band member Oliver Simm got overwhelmed. He couldn’t suppress his excitement in his speech.
I don’t know what we were expecting but we weren’t expecting this.
The album XX had been described as “a record of its time” by the head judge Simon Frith.
As replying to the query how would they spend the prize amount, Sim seemed clueless. But bandmate Romy Croft hinted about a new studio that will replace the bathroom size garage, where the Mercury award winning album XX was created.
