July 1, 2010 (Sampurn Wire): India is full of musical talents and the talented musicians from the country have been honored with different musical awards overseas. Surprisingly, India did not have its own awards function for music until recently. However, now the native talents will be appreciated here as India gets its first Music Awards event.

The Indian Music Academy (IMA) has teamed up with Reliance Broadcast Network Ltd to develop awards, which will celebrate all music genres. The ‘Big IMA Awards 2010’ was announced at an event, which consisted of panelists like Jagjit Singh, Shivkumar Sharma and Merchant brothers Salim and Sulaiman among others.

Shivkumar Sharma said, “Till today, we do not have any exclusive music awards to honor the musicians in the country although we have many other awards. This award is aimed to encourage our music industry.”

Salim Merchant stated, “In our country, the musicians are not getting their due honor and dignity. But, this will change with this award event. This should have been done a long time ago, but it is better late than never.”

The stalwarts and respected musicians of Indian music industry will comprise the jury, which will select the nominees for these awards.

IMA co-founder Durga Jasraj added, “The responsible jury will make sure that the BIG Indian music academy awards come out as the most respected recognition of world class quality music.”

The awards will be presented in January 2011. It aims to recognize music talent of all the genres of Indian music and includes Bollywood, Hindustani, Carnatic, pop, folk, sufi, ghazal, jazz etc.
