JEFF BRIDGES fought back tears backstage at Sunday’s (07Mar10) Academy Awards as he paid tribute to his late father, after winning the Oscar for Best Actor.

Bridges took home his first Oscar for his role as a grizzled and boozy country music star in Crazy Heart, and he was well-composed when he credited his late parents, Lloyd and Dorothy, for his Hollywood career during his acceptance speech.

He said, “Thank you mom and dad for turning me on to such a groovy profession. This is honouring them as much as it is me.”

But backstage, the actor couldn’t hold back his tears and he broke down when he was asked what he would tell his father after winning the Oscar.

Regaining composure he added, “I got the baton he passed on to me. Here you go dad.”
