According to Jeff Probst, the host of the show, the production initially selected 50 players form the past seasons and panned them down to 20 players leaving a place for a possible player from Samoa. Some of the selection were made whom the production thought would be exciting to see. Though the players are classified as the Heroes and the Villains, depending on their natural style, they can take whatever role which they feel would be best for the survival.
