Aamir Khan’s step brother Hyder Khan, is gearing up for the release of his film ‘Trump Card’ this Friday with Aamir Khan’s film ‘3 Idiots’. In an interview he tells Jyothi Venkatesh that he has never tried to cash the fact that he is related to a megastar like Aamir Khan, because he wants to make it big on his own.

What is ‘Trump Card’ all about?

‘Trump Card’ is a film which will keep you on the edge of your seats and make you want to see more of it. ‘Trump Card’ has newcomers like Pankaj, Urvashi, Maansi besides me.

What appealed to you as far as ‘Trump Card’ is concerned?

I was actually looking out for an action movie after working in a romantic film like ‘Dil To Deewana Hai’. I grabbed the offer when the director Arshad Khan approached me because the subject had not only good suspense, but also action and was thrilling too. I would say that the film does not need a male lead, because like ‘All The Best’, it is a packaged subject in its totality.

What is your role in ‘Trump Card’?

I play the role of Veer, a guy who is romantic but at the same time short tempered and quite a temperamental guy. It is true that I was supposed to have made by debut with the film ‘Tarannum’ with Saroj Khan as the director.

Unfortunately for me, the film was shelved.

Does it mean that ‘Trump Card’ isn’t your debut film as an actor?

I had shot for ‘Dil To Deewana Hai’, which is also ready for release, even before I shot for ‘Trump Card’, though ‘Trump Card’ will be my first film to hit the screen, ‘Dil To Deewana Hai’ directed by Raja Bundela is an out and out romantic love story in which I have been teamed opposite Sada from the South.

To what extent do you bank on ‘Dil To Deewana Hai’?

I am keeping my fingers crossed for the release of ‘Dil To Deewana Hai’, because love stories generally are able to strike a chord with the audiences, though you cannot be sure that every love story will click at the box office. If a big budget story like ‘Love Story 2050’ which had Priyanka Chopra with Harman Baweja crashed at the box office, a small budget love story with new comers like ‘Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na’ clicked big time at the box office. Isn’t it?

Is there any other film up your sleeves besides ‘Trump Card’ and ‘Dil To Deewana Hai’?

Besides ‘Trump Card’ and ‘Dil To Deewana Hai’, I am also having a very important project like ‘Ghaav’ directed by Ravi Sinha. ‘Ghaav’ is based on the hit of the 80’s, ‘Ankush’ directed by director N. Chandra which catapulted the career of the then newcomer Nana Patekar. I play the role of Surya, a slum boy made immortal by Nana Patekar in ‘Ankush’ and Saadhika Randhawa plays my leading lady in the film. Saadhika plays an ACP with whom I fall in love in the film.

To what extent have you cashed in on the fact that you are Aamir Khan’s step brother?

I have never tried to cash in on Aamir’s name. If you do not have the talent, it will not help you be an actor just because you happen to be related to some star. If that was the criterion, after ‘Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na’, every film in which Imran Khan had acted should have emerged a super duper hit. For that matter, even an actor like Abhishek Bachchan, who is in demand today, would not have had to struggle in the initial days of his career, by virtue of him being the son of a legendary star like Amitabh Bachchan. Isn’t it?

How do you rate Aamir as an actor?

I am a big fan of Aamir bhai. I liked him the best in his films like ‘Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin’, ‘Sarfarosh’ and ‘Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke’.

What have you learnt while waiting for a release?

I have realized that it’s frustrating to sit at home. Now that ‘Trump Card’ is about to be released, I consider myself a happy actor. I have also learnt that in today’s times, the post production is more important than even shooting. Just a release will not help an actor. You need a hit film to propel your career as an actor.

Can you elucidate?

After making his debut as an actor with ‘Ishq Vishk’, even a talented actor like Shahid Kapoor had to wait till his film ‘Jab We Met’ clicked to emerge as a hot star in Bollywood. For me, the role is of supreme importance, because if you have a power packed role, even a single scene as an actor can take you from here to there in a jiffy. To prove myself as a formidable actor, I need to crack at doing challenging roles.
