NEW YORK - Hollywood star Nicolas Cage has been conferred a special award by the United Nations in recognition of his humanitarian work.

The actor, who is a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador on Drugs and Crime, was presented with the UN Correspondents Association’s Global Citizen of the Year award at a special dinner to recognise those who are involved with humanitarian causes, reports hollywood.com.

At the dinner Cage insisted he is glad to use his fame “to shine a spotlight on the need for global justice.”

The star recently visited a Kenyan prison to speak with Somali pirates awaiting trial, in a bid to boost awareness of the piracy problem in the Indian Ocean.
