After getting hit by around 25000 pies in his life, the happy-go-lucky comedian-actor lost his fight with cancer on 22nd October 2009. The 83-year-old slapstick comedian was admitted in the Calvary Hospital in the Bronx last week. Along with cancer he was also suffering from other ailments. Sales was married to the famous Broadway queen and June Taylor dancer, Trudy Carson. Their sons Hunt and Tony are musicians and have worked with Iggy Pop, David Bowie, Todd Rundgren. Sales lost his father when he was 5 year old.

Sales was widely known for his ‘Lunch with Soupy Sales‘ show, which was basically a children’s show where he was hit with a pie on the face after each episode. In 1978, ‘The New Soupy Sales‘ show appeared which had the same format and ran for a single season airing 65 episodes.

Sales was suspended for two weeks after he played a joke on air. He jokingly asked his patrons to mail him money, which to the studios astonishment started coming in huge amounts. Another controversy involving him stated that on his show he told dirty jokes, but the same was never proved.

Sales also created the dance craze single, “The Mouse” which he even performed on the Ed Sullivan show, where he appeared a number of times, once with the Beatles. He was also a panelist on the weekly panel game show ‘Whats my line’. The all-rounder also had his own radio show on WNBC-AM, during the 1980s. Sales also voiced for the character of Donkey Kong in the animated show ‘Saturday Supercade’.
