Comedian DREW CAREY is facing legal action after allegedly failing to pay for a hotel which was booked for his stay in South Africa during the recent soccer World Cup.

The avid sports fan allegedly instructed his assistant to contact a travel firm in January (10) to help organise a month-long trip to the country for this summer’s (10) tournament.

Carey, who owns Major League Soccer (MLS) team the Seattle Sounders, allegedly asked the tour company to book him tickets for some of the games, and arrange a 35-night stay at a five star resort - costing a total of $376,930 (£251,287).

In papers filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Thursday (30Sep10), bosses at the travel firm claim they managed to get Carey the tickets and they paid a $220,000 (£148,000) down payment for the hotel.

But Carey allegedly only covered the cost of the tickets and never provided the money for the room, reports TMZ.com.

Heads at the tour company are seeking the money they allegedly lost in the deal, as well as interest and damages.

A rep for the funnyman says, “This is a ridiculous lawsuit. The company knew in early March that Drew was not booking the trip through them and we are confident that Drew will be vindicated in court.”
