New York (GaeaTimes.com) - Oktoberfest is a 16 day to 18 day festival held each year in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. The festival generally runs from late September to the first October week-end. A survey has detained that more than six million people attend this most famous event in Germany every year.
The original Oktoberfest occurred in Munich, on October 17, 1810. Though the Munich Oktoberfest is traditionally a sixteen days festival, after the modification of 1994, the festival is now of 17 days when the first Sunday is 2nd October and of 18 days when it is 1st October.
Today the Oktoberfest in Munich has been inaugurated with the traditional tapping of the first beer keg, by Christian Ude, the Mayor of Munich. The festival is held on the area named as Theresienwiese. It is located near Munich’s centre south east of the main train station. This year the organizers expect to break the record in selling the famous beverage as Germany celebrates 200 years of Oktoberfest this year. It is the world’s largest fair and an important part of Bavarian culture. The number of visitors is also expected to increase than the other years. Apart from beer there are delicious items to enjoy upon like Hendl, Schweinsbraten, Haxn, Steckerfisch, Knodel, Rokeg etc.
The origin of Oktoberfest sounds to be intriguing and romantic. The feast is celebrated commemorating a wedding - the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig with Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. Before 1887, the feast was a horse derby, but after that with the beer getting more and more popular, today the beverage is the main attraction of the feast.
Though the Oktoberfest, since its beginning, has been cancelled 24 times due to war, disease and other emergencies, it is a festival every German awaits every year. Oktoberfest is not a mere beer festival, rather, it is a tradition - a trademark of Munich.
