MUMBAI, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com)- It seems that Kolkata-based designer duo Dev R Nil’s attempt to give a striking new look to the traditional Indian outfit of lehenga choli has failed to go down too well in the world of fashion. Miss India Ushoshi Sengupta chose to wear a flowing deep blue lehenga choli with peacock wings adorning it on the National Costume round of the Miss Universe 2010 which was held on Monday at the sin city of Las Vegas, United States.

During the National Costume round of the beauty pageant Miss Universe 2010, the Indian contestant walked the ramp wearing the outlandish outfit that was successful in grabbing many eye-balls. Although one thing is sure that the outfit adorned by the Indian beauty surely added a variety of colors at the beauty contest, it failed to impress the Indian designers as the fashion fraternity has not been kind in its review of the ‘fusion dress.’ Designer Ritu Kumar who has been instrumental in creating outfits that the Indian contestants wear in the national costume round of many years now, told reporters that the main factor which did not go in favor of the outfit was the colors which came out too strongly. Other designers felt that the Kolkata-based designer pair took the theme of peacock a bit too literally.

However, Dev R Nil have defended their bizarre dress that the Indian contestant wore on the Miss Universe 2010 platform saying that they made the outfit based on the brief that was provided to them which said that it had to be inspired from the Indian national bird, peacock while describing the dress as highly contemporary.
