‘Dancing’ twirls past ‘American Idol’ for 1st time
NEW YORK — At least for one week, dancing beat singing on television.
The Nielsen Co. said Tuesday that ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” had a bigger audience than both editions of Fox’s “American Idol” last week. That’s the first time that has happened in the history of the long-running competitions.
“Dancing” appears to have a popular cast this session, with reality TV star Kate Gosselin and former “Baywatch” babe Pamela Anderson. At the same time, experts say it’s a relatively weak cast of competitors on “American Idol.”
Meanwhile, broadcast networks are trying to figure out an April Fools’ Day disaster last week. CBS’ “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” and “The Mentalist,” as well as ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy,” all had the smallest audiences ever for first-run episodes.
