HAVANA - “Los Dioses Rotos” (Broken Gods) by director Ernesto Daranas is Cuba’s submission for the Best Foreign Film Oscar, an official said.

The film is a social drama that revisits the story of a famous procurer in Havana at the beginning of the 20th century, about whom a professor does research for a university thesis that purports to show the character’s relevance today.

A print of the film has been sent to the organisers of the prestigious Hollywood prizes, Rosa Maria Rovira, an international relations official at the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry, told EFE.

The first work by Daranas, who also wrote the script, premiered at the 30th New Latin American Film Festival in Havana last December, where it won prizes from the public and film critics.

Starring in the movie are Silvia Aguila, Ana Bu, Carlos Ever Fonseca, Hector Noas and Isabel Santos.

“Los Dioses Rotos” was chosen by the Cuban Film Press Association as Best Cuban Film of 2008 and has won prizes at several festivals.
