‘Despicable Me’ dashes off with $56.4M opening

LOS ANGELES — The villain in “Despicable Me” tries to steal the moon, but the movie itself will have to settle for a huge opening atop the box office.

The first 3-D animated film from Universal Pictures debuted at No. 1 this weekend with $56.4 million, according to final studio figures Monday. That’s about $4 million lower than the Sunday estimate of $60.1 million.

“Despicable Me” stars Steve Carell as the voice of bad-guy Gru, with Jason Segel, Russell Brand and Julie Andrews among the supporting cast.

The week’s other new wide release, the sci-fi thriller “Predators” from 20th Century Fox, made $24.8 million.

The top 20 movies at U.S. and Canadian theaters Friday through Sunday, followed by distribution studio, gross, number of theater locations, average receipts per location, total gross and number of weeks in release, as compiled Monday by Hollywood.com are:
