NY court: Swedish author likely to lose fight
NEW YORK — An appeals court says a Swedish author’s book is substantially similar to J.D. Salinger’s “The Catcher in the Rye” and says it is unlikely the author will win his fight to publish it in the United States.
The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan issued its decision Friday.
Salinger died in January at age 91. The case was one of his last attempts to protect his privacy a half century after the release of “Catcher in the Rye.”
Fredrik Colting’s book is titled: “60 Years Later: Coming Through the Rye.” A lower court last year blocked the book’s publication in the U.S., saying it too closely mirrors Salinger’s classic without adequate parody or critique.
