Rock band Devo gives red cone hat to Ohio museum

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The oddball rock group Devo has donated one of the red conical hats from its hit video “Whip It” to an Ohio museum.

The Ohio Historical Society says it has received a small collection of artifacts from the band and its official archivist. The items include stickers, T-shirts, costumes and a flower pot-style hat worn in the band’s memorable 1980 video.

Three of the band’s founding members grew up in Akron and met at Kent State University in the 1970s.

The group’s name came from a theory the human race is in a process of devolution, which members read about in an anti-Darwinism pamphlet.

The band most recently performed in Ohio in 2008 for Barack Obama’s presidential campaign. An annual DEVOtional convention is held in Cleveland.

Oddball? Really? sigh. Where were u in the 80’s when a lot of us were listening to Punk Rock and New Wave. Devo has a cynical social commentary in every one of their songs…apparently, you were too busy trying to ‘get’ just how good Genesis could be and listening to love songs in a very socially tumultuous time… very similar to today… so much going on and nobody paying attention….there is a war for the very soul of the world, DEVO recognized back then what a lot of us know to be truth today….. we ARE DEVO. The anti-darwinism pamphlet was written by a religious zealot who was a creationist. They did not get the idea for devolution from within the pamphlet they discussed and came up with it themselves because of how backwards thinking the pamphlet was….how the heck can you devolve if you didn’t evolve in the first place? Devolution is the idea that human kind already evolved to its apex and we are now in the process of returning to apes… that pamphlet helped them come up with the concept of DE-VOlution…they didn’t read it anywhere… Did anyone actually LISTEN to what the band was saying or just writing the words down and proving We are, in face, DEVO?
