Students protest bail for SAfrican hip-hop artist

JOHANNESBURG — Police have fired rubber bullets to disperse some 2,000 rioting youths outside a courthouse in South Africa.

The students were protesting a bail hearing Wednesday for a hip-hop artist who is accused of murder after four children were run down during a drag race in Soweto.

Authorities say Molemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye and his co-defendant Themba Tshabalala were under the influence of cocaine and morphine at the time of the crash.

Rioters hurled bricks and stones at police on Wednesday and chanted calls to kill the musician and Tshabalala. The students threatened to use “mob justice” if the hip-hop artist is granted bail.

Two other children remain in critical condition after last week’s crash.
