In the United States, the Friday after Thanksgiving is called Black Friday . The traditional Christmas shopping season begins with this Black Friday. Black Friday is not an official holiday, but many employees have the day off except banker and retailer. This holiday increases the number of potential shoppers.Retailers often decorate for the Christmas and holiday season only a week before . Many retailers open very early even at 5 am or earlier and offer attractive discounts to draw people to their stores.
The term “Black Friday” originated in Philadelphia in reference to the heavy traffic on that day . More recently, merchants and the media have used it instead refer to the beginning of the period in which retailers go from being in the red to being in the black (i.e., turning a profit).
Shoppers are eagerly awaiting these Black Friday. They plan their Black Friday shopping ahead of the big shopping day that heralds the Holiday shopping season. Most Americans celebrate this day by gathering at home with family or friends for a holiday feast.
If you were hoping to get yourself a great bargain on Black Friday 2009, then the discounts that will be on offer may disappoint you, according to the Accenture Holiday Shopping Survey. Black Friday 2008 was a great build up to the holiday season for shoppers, but 2009 will be different due to smaller profit margins.
Although Black Friday, as the first shopping day after Thanksgiving, has served as the unofficial beginning of the Christmas season at least since the start of the modern Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1924, the term “Black Friday” has been traced back only to the 1960s.
Thanksgiving Day, presently celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. It has been an annual tradition in the United States since 1863. It did not become a federal holiday until 1941. Thanksgiving was historically a religious observation to give thanks to Jesus, and is still celebrated by some religious families for this mean, but it is now considered a secular holiday as well and moreover it is the most favourite day for the shoppers.
