Sita’s viewpoint on Ramayana: Indo-Bangladesh mono drama to go global

DHAKA - An Indo-Bangladesh theatre venture articulating Sita’s viewpoint on the epic Ramayana, that enthralled audiences here, is to tour Britain and North America.
According to Lubna Mariam, general secretary of Shadhona that produced “Sitar Agni-Parikkha” (Sita’s test by fire), this production - a joint effort by Bangladeshi and Indian theatre artistes - will also be staged in major Indian cities.
Delhi danseuse Averee Chaurey performed all characters in the mono drama, written and directed by Bangladesh’s Simon Zakaria, to a packed audience that braved a heavy downpour over the national capital, The Daily Star said Sunday.
Chaurey, an accomplished actor from Delhi, has worked with leading Indian theatre houses like Bohurupee and Naya Theatre (of the late Habib Tanvir). She was supported by a chorus of young and talented Bangladeshi artistes.
“Averee Chaurey was a revelation. With just a turn or glare, this seasoned actor can summon an epitome of femininity, a bullying demon king, a gossipy resident of Lanka and a contemptuous Ram.
“This post-feminist approach to the fire ordeal of Sita has the essence of secular indigenous performing art forms (still practised in rural Bangladesh), tailored to stir the sensitivities of an urban audience,” the newspaper said.
