August 27, 2010 (Sampurn Wire): The Bengali film industry has churned out a number of good movies in the past couple of years. According to directors, the film industry is no longer a mystery to the audience, so films based on this industry needs to have stronger storylines.

Some of the recent Bengali movies with tinsel-town themes include, ‘Abohoman’, ‘Khela’, ‘Houseful’, ‘Angshumaner Chobi’, ‘Sukno Lanka’, ‘Ekti Tarar Khonje’ etc. All of the above-mentioned films were made on the Bengali film industry. Some of the nostalgic film admirers of Bengal think that the new line of movies does not match up to the likes of Satyajit Ray and Mrinal Sen, but that point is open to debate.

According to actor Barun Chanda, a film within a film does not advance the cause of Bengali cinema, it has an autobiographical feel to it. These films are nothing more than platforms for the directors to make personal statement on the industry.

According to actor/director Kaushik Ganguly, movies on the film industry tend to have an overdose of clichés like extra-marital affairs, casting-couch, bitter politics etc.

Srijit Mukherjee, the director of ‘Autograph’ thinks it is very hard to engage the audience with the same old stories about tinsel town. Meanwhile, Kaushik’s “Aar Ekti Premer Golpo” (also based on the movie industry) will have its New York Premiere on September 24. The film will see its Indian release by December this year.
