MUMBAI, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com)- Veteran actress and danseuse Hema Malini enthralled the residents of Varanasi with her magical dance performance a few years back on the ghats of the Holt Ganges in Varanasi. However, her recent appointment as the Clean Ganga project of BJP-ruled Uttarakhand government has not gone down well with a number of people. A lot of people are looking at this as a purely political move. A Haridwar based pollution activist said that it is not possible for a fashionable actress like her to do justice to such a job. The actress was named Sparsh Ganga campaign’s brand ambassador in last month. The Congress is taking potshots at rival BJP over this issue.
Harish Rawat the Union minister of state for labour was fuming over the issue. He said that some efficient person with a solid background on environmental science should have been appointed in the post instead of actress Hema Malini. BJP was quick to retort to this allegation. Sushma Swaraj a senior BJP leader tried to defend her appointment. She called the actress a responsible person who will do justice to the job. The environmental activists are not agreeing to that argument though.
The environmental activists are of the opinion that a number of ashrams have illegally encroached on the riverbed and they are a favorite destination for some of the VIP politicians. Hema Malini will find it tough to stop at least 800 million litres of untreated sewage that is discharged into the river every day. The Ganges has become way too polluted over the last few decades and it remains questionable whether the campaign will be able to improve the situation.
