Summary Box: Box-office futures trading OK’d
NEW BOX-OFFICE TRADING OK’D: Federal regulators have allowed a new online exchange to proceed to trade future box-office receipts for movies. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission voted 3-2.
BIG HOLLYWOOD STUDIOS OPPOSED: They say it could be open to manipulation.
HOW IT WORKS: Trading would be based on the amount of money a movie takes in during its opening weekend. An investor who buys a contract with longer odds takes on greater risk and the potential to make more money.
