British singer ALEXANDRA BURKE has paid tribute to the “true survivors” of Haiti after visiting the earthquake-ravaged country on a charity trip.

Burke flew to the capital Port-au-Prince earlier this week (begs08Feb10) to witness the devastation first-hand and visit the locals left homeless in the disaster.

The Hallelujah hitmaker admits the scenes have left her “heartbroken” - but she’s been inspired by the Haitians’ fighting spirit.

She says, “Everything people said is true - the damage here is of biblical proportions. The desperation of so many people has broken my heart. Despite going through hell, (they’re) still here smiling.

“So many children homeless, so many lives ruined. It’s these kids who bear the brunt. But to see them singing and dancing at this centre makes me so proud.

“It makes you realise the show must go on. If you want to see true survivors, come here. If an earthquake hit the U.K. we just wouldn’t bounce back.”

And the 21 year old has called for more donations - because she fears the nation will struggle with upcoming bad weather.

She adds, “In a month it will be rainy season and in three months it will be hurricane season. People are living out in the open in camps and hygiene is bad. It could turn into an even bigger disaster when the bad weather hits.”
