Wyclef talks relief efforts, urges Obama to make ’sustainable commitment’ to rebuilding Haiti

Wyclef Jean talks about Haiti relief efforts in NY

NEW YORK — Haitian-born singer and producer Wyclef Jean says he is working with his foundation to deliver cooked meals, water and medical supplies to survivors of the earthquake in Haiti.

Surrounded by prominent New York black clergy, including the Rev. Al Sharpton, Jean spoke in Harlem on Wednesday about his recent trip to Haiti and relief efforts by his Yele (YEH’-leh) Haiti Foundation.

He also urged President Barack Obama to make a “sustainable commitment” to rebuilding the island nation during his State of the Union address.

The 37-year-old Grammy-winning artist said he traveled to Haiti the day after the Jan. 22 “Hope for Haiti Now” telethon to raise funds for aid efforts.

The powerful earthquake on Jan. 12 killed an estimated 200,000 people.
