Monali Thakur, Indial Idol 2 contestant, who became famous for her sensuous song “Zara Zara Touch Me” from Race is recently on the news, not for her singing but for her much-talked relationship with Chang Meiyung, another contestant of Indian Idol.
Monali, a Bengali playback singer, was born on November 3, 1985 in Kolkata. Her father Shakti Thakur is a Bengali singer and actor and her sister Mehuli Thakur-Goswami is also a professional playback singer.
Monali learned music from Pandit Ajay Chakraborty. She was in college when she got a chance to perform in Indian Idol 2 through audition. Her life changed soon after.
Indian Idol 2, the Indian version of American Idol, gave her a chance to show her talent to the world. Her melodious voice captured heart of millions. Unfortunately, she was eliminated from Indian Idol 2.
It was a very shocking as well as disappointing news for Monali. But she later realized that it was a blessing that came in disguise when Anu Malik, one of the judges, turned up with an offer to sing for the movie Jaan-E-Mann. This led in turn to the opportunity to sing two songs for the hit movie Race in 2008 - “Khwab Dekhe (Sexy lady)” and “Zara Zara Touch Me”.
“Zara Zara Touch Me” was enormously successful, becoming the fourth-most-played song on Indian radio during the first half of 2008.
She also sang in the movies Golmaal Returns and the forthcoming Mr. Bhatti on Chutti and Dulha Mil Gaya, and is working on her first solo album. She is coming with a video, which she claims would be very different and will have a classical touch. We wish Monali a very good luck for all her future ventures.
