Mtv Latin America Awards Go Gaga

Pop sensation LADY GAGA was the toast of the Latin American music scene on Thursday night (15Oct09), winning two honours at the Los Premios MTV Awards in Los Angeles.

Bosses at MTV split the ceremony between a string of cities including Bogota, Colombia, Buenos Aires, Argentina and Mexico City, with performances from the regional shows broadcast at the L.A. leg, held in the city’s Gibson Amphitheatre.
Canadian-Portuguese singer Nelly Furtado opened the L.A. show with a song from her Spanish-language album Mi Plan.
Lady Gaga was a big winner on the night, picking up the Song of the Year prize for Poker Face and the Best New International Artist trophy. She took to her Twitter.com page to thank her fans, writing, “I’m so honoured to win two Latin American MTV Awards. I love you thank u (sic) for your love and support.”
Pop singer Paulina Rubio won Best Soloist and later took to the stage to sing a bilingual duet with Cobra Starship’s frontman Gabe Saporta.
Rapper 50 Cent was on hand to present Puerto Rican duo Wisin and Yandel with the coveted Artist Of The Year prize, and they went onto win in the Best Video category for their hit track Abusadora, which they performed at the event.
The ceremony also saw British rocker Morrissey present the special Legend Award to the seminal Mexican rock band Cafe Tacuba.
Other awards went to Mexican artists including rockers Panda (Best Group), pop trio Reik (Best Pop Artist) and alternative band Zoe (Best Rock Artist), while Puerto Rican Calle 13 picked up Best Urban Artist.
The event saw Shakira perform from Bogota, with Australian pop duo The Veronicas hitting the stage in Mexico City.
