German actress Hanne Hiob dies at 86

BERLIN — German actress Hanne Hiob, a daughter of playwright Bertolt Brecht, has died, officials said Wednesday. She was 86.

Hiob — the daughter of Brecht and his first wife, opera singer Marianne Zoff — died on Tuesday in Munich, the Berlin office that represents Brecht’s descendants said. It provided no other information, including the cause of death.

Hiob was born in the southern German city on March 12, 1923. She grew up with her mother and trained as a dancer and actress, later performing at theaters in West and East Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Among other parts, she played the title roles in her father’s plays “Saint Joan of the Stockyards” and “Carrar’s Rifles.”

Hiob retired from the theater in 1976.

In later years, she became involved in pacifist political activities and promoted her father’s works. In 1990, she published a collection of letters from Brecht to Zoff and herself.

No information was immediately available about Hiob’s survivors or funeral arrangements.
