WASHINGTON - Hollywood legend Michael Douglas is using his celebrity status in a bid to realise the dream of a nuclear weapons-free world.

He oversaw a debate on the issue at the Italian embassy in Washington D.C. earlier this week.

A host of experts participated in the debate, reports Contactmusic.

Douglas used the occasion to question whether U.S. President Barack Obama was addressing the issue.

Former U.S. diplomat Robert Gallucci, who was chief negotiator during the nuclear crisis with North Korea in 1994, revealed during the event that recent US-Russia talks had shown promise, but the threat of nuclear terrorism still existed as a major cause of concern.

The even was sponsored by the Ploughshares Fund, which is dedicated to a nuclear weapons-free world.

Douglas has been supporting the institution ever since he became a member of its board of directors in 2005. (ANI)
