London’s Camden Canal Market reopens after fire

LONDON — A major part of London’s Camden Market has reopened, more than a year after it was burned in a fire.

A 16-piece brass band and many street performers will provide the entertainment at Saturday’s official grand reopening of the Camden Canal Market. Most stalls were open Friday.

Traders have received more than 500,000 pounds ($750,000) in compensation since the fire. Many of the original traders have returned to open stalls again.

The fire in February 2008 caused major damage to clothes and craft market stalls — and to buildings such as the Hawley Arms, a pub frequented by celebrities such as singer Amy Winehouse, rocker Pete Doherty and model Kate Moss. The pub reopened late last year.
