Times Co., Boston Globe unions resume negotiations

BOSTON — Labor union leaders at The Boston Globe say the deep cuts in workers’ pay and benefits they’re offering should be more than enough to save the newspaper, which has been threatened with closure by its owner, The New York Times Co.

The Boston Newspaper Guild, the Globe’s largest union, released a statement Sunday saying its proposed concessions meet the needs of management, and the union is confident the Times Co. is committed to reaching an agreement.

Both sides are resuming negotiations Sunday and will try to make a deal by midnight, the new deadline set by the Times Co. for unions to make $20 million in concessions.

The Guild says it’s offering “tremendous sacrifices.”

The Times Co. said in April that it would close the Globe unless union concessions were made.

BOSTON (AP) — Negotiations are restarting between unions at The Boston Globe and its owner, The New York Times Co., as another deadline approaches for Globe employees to make $20 million in concessions.

The Times Co. extended its original deadline of midnight Friday at the request of leaders of the Boston Newspaper Guild, the Globe’s largest union. They planned to resume negotiations Sunday and try reach an agreement by midnight.

The Guild, which has been asked to come up with half of the concessions, requested the extension after union leaders said the company hadn’t accounted for the salaries and benefits of 80 people who left their jobs this year.

The Times Co. announced in April that it would close the Globe unless the concessions were met.
