Actor Rama Varma Kunjikuttan Thampuran dies at 74

August 26, 2010 (Sampurn Wire): Veteran Malayalam actor Rama Varma Kunjikuttan Thampuran has passed away on Monday, August 24 at the age of 74 years. He has left his wife Sathi Varma, who is manager of ‘Kathkali Kendram’, son Vasudevan and daughter Suma Varma.

The cremation of the late actor was performed on Monday at the Kochi royal family crematorium. Thampuran has acted in various television serials and more than fifty films. Some of the noted movies of the late actor include Mookkilla Rajyathu, Ulladakkam, God Father, Oridathu, Kalyana Raman and Ivory Merchant.

The TV serials in which Rama Varma acted are ‘Chitta’ and ‘Samayam’. He has also played pivotal roles in Syama Prasad’s Telefilm `Kariyilakaattu pole’, ‘Venalinte Ozhivu’ and `Innale Peytha Mazha’.

Thampuran worked as a companion of many senior actors like Mohanlal and Nedumudi Venu in more than 100 films. His performances in the films like ‘Pai Brothers’, ‘Manichithrathaazhu’, ‘Kalyana Raman’ and ‘Pavithram, Kaliyoonjal’ were remarkable. He has also performed in English movie ‘Cotton Mary’, which was directed by Ismail Merchant.

Thampuran was also seen in the central character in a documentary by Doordarshan, which created awareness among the public to keep their surroundings clean. He also penned a book named ‘Aalukal Arangukal’. In this book, the lives of Kathakali artistes are depicted by him.
