The online phenomenon of Facebook.com has taken over the U.S. box office - THE SOCIAL NETWORK has debuted at number one with a gross of $23 million (£15.3 million).

The movie, directed by David Fincher, stars Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield and Justin Timberlake and chronicles the early days of the social networking website.

And it proved to be a big hit with cinema-goers at the weekend (01-03Oct10), befriending film fans and forcing last week’s top choice, animated adventure Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole, to fly down into second place with $10.9 million (£7.27 million).

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps is at three with $10.1 million (£6.73 million), while Renee Zellweger and Bradley Cooper’s horror Case 39 failed to entice viewers and enters at number seven with $5.35 million (£3.57 million).
